Ermano Maggini

About the composer

Ermano Maggini was born in Intragna, Tessin in Switzerland in 1931. He studied at the Musikakademie Zürich and for a short time at the Academy in Barcelona, Spain. In   Zürich he founded a school for guitar playing and he worked as a teacher at other schools, for instance the Kantonsschule Wiedikon. Maggini’s 55 compositions – chamber music, vocal music, works for soli and orchestra – all appeared within about twenty years. His vocal music should always be seen as sacred music, including his settings of modern poems. Maggini died in 1991 in his place of birth.

About the Stabat Mater

Date: 1989
Performers:

Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, mixed choir and orchestra

Length: 26.18 minutes
Particulars:

The Stabat Mater was commissioned by the Kantonsschule Wiedikon. It does not have clearly discernable divisions and moves along in a slow, measured pace, sometimes resembling a funeral procession. Often strongly discordant sounds can be heard, emphasizing the somberness of the text.

Textual variations:

Maggini used the "Analecta"-version of the text, but with following changes:
- Stanza 4, line 2: not "Et tremebat cum videbat" but "Piam Mater, dum videbat"
- Stanza 5, line 2: not "Christi Matrem" but "Matrem Christi"
- Stanza 13, line 1: not "Fac me vere tecum flere" but "Fac me tecum, pie, flere"
- Stanza 14, line 2: not "Te libenter sociare" but "Et me tibi sociare"
- Stanza 16, line 2: not "Passionis eius sortem" but "Passionis fac consortem"
- Stanza 17, line 2: not "Cruce hac inebriari" but "Fac me cruce inebriari"

In 1997 I created the Ultimate Stabat Mater website for Hans with the program FrontPage. At that time he had around 40 Stabat Mater CDs. His notes on the composer, the music, the texts and translations and the different versions all came online. After this he managed the site by adding new composers and translations regularly. At the time of his death in 2005 he had 211 Stabat Maters. After his death I continued collecting the information and managing the site. I wish to thank the Dutch Stabat Mater Foundation which gave me the financial support in 2014 to renew this site!
