ABOUT THIS SITE

On the Ultimate Stabat Mater site you will find my CD-collection of – now 250 – different Stabat Mater compositions: information about the composers, the music and the text. The site also includes translations of the original Latin poem Stabat Mater Dolorosa in 24 different languages. See: Latest additions.

WHY THIS STABAT MATER WEBSITE?

When I realized one day that I owned several CDs with a musical setting of the Stabat Mater, I decided to start a real collection. The Spectrum Muziek Lexicon by Theo Willemze named some 15 composers, so this should be not too difficult. It appeared, however, that the number was substantially larger. I now know about some 600 composers, who, fortunately, have not all been recorded on CD yet. Still, a substantial fraction has been released on CD and my collection grew rapidly. READ MORE.

On 28 December 2005 my dear Hans passed away. The Ultimate Stabat Mater Website was one of his passions. Hans begun this journey of musical discovery in 1992 with the Stabat Mater from Haydn. He searched systematically and persistently for composers, performances on CD and translations of the original Latin poem. He brought the religious, literary and musical world of the Stabat Mater to life. Due to the Ultimate Stabat Mater website he came into contact with musicians, composers and music lovers around the world.Hans has always enjoyed all the contacts he had through this website. The website will remain online as a memorial to Hans and I will try to continue his work from now on.

In 1997 I created the Ultimate Stabat Mater website for Hans with the program FrontPage. At that time he had around 40 Stabat Mater CDs. His notes on the composer, the music, the texts and translations and the different versions all came online. After this he managed the site by adding new composers and translations regularly. At the time of his death in 2005 he had 211 Stabat Maters. After his death I continued collecting the information and managing the site. I wish to thank the Dutch Stabat Mater Foundation which gave me the financial support in 2014 to renew this site!
