About the composer
Amaral Vieira was born in 1952 in São Paulo in Brazil. He studied composition in France with Messiaen and piano in London with Carl Seemann. Besides being a pianist he is a composer with some 500 works to his credit. He won several international prizes for his works. The Stabat Mater was composed in 1988 in a version with piano. A second version, with the piano replaced by a string orchestra, was completed in 1989.
About the Stabat Mater
|Performers||Soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, mixed choir and strings|
|Particulars||Each stanza is treated as a separate musical entity, so the work contains 20 sections. It is predominantly a choral work, the soloists coming in only for brief interventions.|
|Textual variations||The exact version of the "Vatican"-text is used, though in stanza 18 the tenor comes in with the extra sentence "Inflammatus et accensus" from the "Analecta"-version.|
|Performers||Violin and chamber orchestra|
|Particulars||The composer says about this piece: "In 1989 I selected parts of my composition to organize a new version for violin and chamber orchestra. It is a cycle of nine reflections, generally introspecive and with great lyrism. It makes possible an intense dialogue between the violin and the orchestra. In spite of the tragic main theme, it concludes both victorious and jubilating, as a symbol of human redemption through the suffering of Christ"|
|Textual variations||No text is used.|
