About the composer
Jean-Claude Schlaepfer was born in 1961 in
Geneva. He studied piano. His corresponding theoretical studies were undertaken
at the 'Conservatoire supérieur de musique de Genève' where he acquired his
diploma in musical culture, won a prize for composition and the prize of the
city of Geneva. He went on to study with Betsy Jolas, composer and professor at
the 'Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris'. In 1988 he won the Swiss
Musicians Association Prize. Besides his composing,
he teaches harmony and musical
analysis at the Conservatoire supérieur de musique and the Conservatoire
populaire de Genève.

| Particulars | The composition has four parts or movements. Through a cry the first part expresses the mother’s stupefaction in seeing her son die. Through the silences of the second part, one can hear the voices of the crowd, rambling at first and mounting in presence before the suffering of Christ. In the third part the intensity of the emotion grows when the choirs and soloist shout "Christi Mortem!". The following silences express the general consternation in face of his agony. In the last part the crowd speaks of the ascension of the soul. |

| About this CD | I received this cd from my Swiss friend Daisy Mottier-Beltrani. The cd is a recording of a concert from Swiss Radio Romande on March 20th 1991. The cd is included in a beautifully special art book with the title: Dialogue Painting - Music. Daisy presents in this book her pictural expression of the Stabat Mater, inspired by the contemporary interpretation of de Genevois composer Jean-Claude Schlaepfer. I visited the exhibition of the Stabat Mater paintings in Switzerland in 2008 and I was very impressed! Please see also www.daisymottier.ch/Stabat_Mater.htm .
