Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger

About the composer
Joseph Rheinberger was born on 17 March 1839 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. He spent most of his life in Munich, Germany where he died in 1901. He was composer, organ player and a renowned teacher of counterpoint and held the position of Munich Court Kapellmeister. He composed music for organ, church music and opera's.
Felipe Gasper wrote me, that Rheinberger composed another Stabat Mater in 1864 (c minor, opus 16). It is written for soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, choir and orchestra and has 5 movements of 4 stanzas each..


About the Stabat Mater

Performers Mixed choir and organ, but a string orchestra is optional.
Length 13.40 minutes (CD 1) and 15.19 minutes (CD 2)
Particulars Rheinberger's Stabat Mater in g minor, opus 138 is divided into four sections and has been written for use in the liturgy. It is described as having a popular-traditional quality, using some baroque rhythms and ending in a quiet fugue.
Textual variations The "Analecta"-version of the text is used, with the following variations:
- Stanza 4, line 2: not "Et tremebat" but "Pia Mater"
- Stanza 6, line 2: not "Piam Matrem" but "Christi Matrem"
- Stanza 13, line 1: not "Fac me vere tecum flere" but "Fac me tecum, pie, flere"
- Stanza 14, line 2: not "Te libenter sociare" but "Et me tibi sociare"
- Stanza 16, line 2: not "Passionis eius sortem" but "Passionis fac consortem"
- Stanza 17, line 2: not "Cruce hac inebriari" but "Fac me cruce inebriari".

About this CD Another excursion into the world of Stabat Mater settings. As the CD contains 5 Stabat Mater settings, it should be a "must" for every collector, especially as it has the only Gaffori registration that I know of.
Recorded at the St.Martinus church, Euskirchen-Kirchheim, in July 1995.
