About the composer
Lorenzo Perosi was born on 20 December 1872 in Tortona, Italy. He became a priest in 1893
and was appointed choirmaster at St.Marks in Venice in 1884 and at the Sistine Chapel in
Rome in 1898. He wrote 33 masses and a number of oratorios which had international success.
His style is described as naive and conservative, but of a fresh and gentle spirituality.
Perosi died 12 December 1956 in Rome.
This CD is a recording by Radio Vaticana of a concert which was given July 24, 1988 in
honor of Pope John Paul II in the Courtyard of the Palazzo Pontifico, Castel Gandolfo. The
speech in which the Pope expressed his thanks is also recorded and this was his opinion on
the music:
"The mysterious and fascinating language of music has been combined with the
language of faith, touching the very core of the inner being of Man. When great, true
music becomes prayer, it touches on the inexpressible."
