About the composer
Frank Martin was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1890, but moved to the Netherlands in
1946, where he lived in the little town of Naarden until his death in 1974. He became
world famous by his Petite Symphonie Concertante for clavichord, harp, piano and
strings. He wrote orchestral music as well as vocal works, for instance some cantatas and
an oratorio, some ballets and an opera.

| Particulars | The composition is part of a "Maria-Triptychon", consisting of Ave Maria, Magnificat and Stabat Mater. It was written expressly for the soprano Irmgard Seefried and her husband the violist Wolfgang Schneiderhahn. The work has an insistent dissonant rhythm and is very intense and deeply lamenting. |
