About the composer
Franz Lachner was born in 1803 in Rain am Lech. He was a German composer and
conductor. His father, a city organist and watchmaker, insisted that all of his
children had musical instruction; all should learn voice and violins as well as
piano and organ. The fact that the (poor) family had no music paper nor books
was not a problem. The children learned to read music from notes written on the
wall and practised on a dumb piano. Not only Franz but also five of his siblings
became musicians. He went to Vienna in 1823 and became personally acquainted
with Schubert and Beethoven. From 1826 till 1834 he was conductor of the
Kärntnertor Theater in Vienna. From 1836 tot 1865 he was conductor of the Royal
Court Orchestra in Munich. He became highly prominent in the musical world of
that city. Personal confrontation with Wagner brought his career to an abrupt
end in 1864. Lachner died in 1890 in Munich. His compositions were performed
very often during his life, but they are almost forgotten nowadays.

| About this CD | Con Passione, a Dutch choir from Alkemade attended me to this cd. They performed the Lachner Stabat Mater in March 2008. I am so sorry that I did not visit the concert because I now like this piece very much. A member of the choir was so kind to send me a copy of the cd but eventually I bought it myself on the internet. |
