The Eton Choirbook
This is a copy of the first page of John Browne's Stabat Mater from the Eton Choirbook (Eton College MS 178). A highly developed form of notation is used, with complex rhythms written in red ink. Choristers were expected to stand before a lectern holding the manuscript, the music for each voice laid out on opposite folios, with boys at the front and men in the rear of the group.
