About the composer
Pedro de Escobar was born in Oporto, Portugal about 1465. He was also referred to as Pedro
de Porto, or Pedro del Puerto and is regarded as the leading Portuguese composer of his
time. He was a singer in the royal Castillian chapel of queen Isabella and after that
worked at the Portuguese court. From 1507 to 1514 he was Master of the Chapel in Sevilla,
Spain. He probably died in Evora in 1535. Among his works are two mass settings, eight
hymns and seven motets.
