About the composer
Alphons Johannes Maria Diepenbrock was born in Amsterdam in 1862, where he studied Latin
and Greek. He is regarded as one of the most important Dutch composers. The style of his -
predominantly vocal - works is a mixture of the Romanticism of Wagner, the asceticism of
Palestrina and the impressionism of the Debussy. He composed numerous songs, with piano or
orchestral accompaniment, works for choir a cappella, or with orchestra, and music for
several plays. He was a personal friend of Gustav Mahler. He died in Amsterdam in 1921.
