About the composer
Salvador Brotons was born in Barcelona in Spain in 1959 and
studied flute, composition and conducting at the Barcelona Conservatory of
Music. In 1985 he moved to the USA where he received his Doctorate in Music from
Florida State University. Salvador Brotons composed mainly for orchestra and
chamber groups, but also composed an opera and a musical. Of his more than 80
pieces some 15 were awarded prizes. He has been conductor of several orchestras
in Spain and the USA and is conductor and musical director of the Vancouver
Symphony Orchestra since 1991.

| Particulars | The Stabat Mater opus 73 is divided into seven parts. The symphonic orchestra plays an important role in the work and is used to express the feelings of pain and compassion of the text. It is music that wants to be listened to attentively. |
| Textual variations | The "Analecta"-version of the text is
used, with following changes: - Stanza 16, line 2: not "Passionis eius sortem" but "Passionis fac consortem" - After the "Amen" Brotons adds the same line "In sempiterna saecula" (In all eternity) that Rossini added in his Stabat Mater At the end of the first part the first stanza is repeated, and the seventh stanza is used twice, at the beginning and the end of the third part. |
