About the composer
Joseph-Marie Audoli is probably not the composer of
this Stabat Mater. Audoli was born in 1751 in Roubion in the Nice county of France. In this
country he worked his whole life, as a priest, as a teacher, as a school-master. He died in 1846, almost
95 years old. Though not a composer, Audoli has written down an extensive part of the traditional music as it
was sung in his country, the valley of the Tinée river. His manuscript was bound in December 1778 and contains
a large number of liturgical works, masses, hymns, sequences and this Stabat Mater.

| Date | 1600 - 1700? |
| Performers | Soprano, Tenor, Baritone and male choir |
| Length | 5.19 minutes |
| Particulars | The description of the singers as a "soprano" or "tenor" is somewhat misleading, as the singing is not classical, but clearly in a traditional way, like we can find in the traditional singing of liturgical texts in Sardinia and Corsica. See my description of the Sardinian Stabat Maters or those of Corsica. Therefore, it is hard to say if you hear a tenor or a baritone. Every stanza is sung by a single voice, but there is also a background, a continuous "drone", or humming, of - probably - the male voices. If you like this kind of music, and I do, absolutely beautiful. |
| Textual variations | Though the CD-inserts shows the texts of 10 stanzas, in fact only 5 stanzas are performed. These are the stanzas 1, 11, 3, 9 and 20, in this order. |
